Call to Artists!

Keep Safe Call to Artists!

Want to use art to make a real difference in our world this year?

Last year, over 80 local artists combined forces to take small wooden boxes and transform them through all different mediums into powerful works of art with a purpose: to unite with the local community and with the Keep Safe Project to raise awareness of the crisis facing endangered animal species and the loss of their habitat, and to actively support animal conservation organizations worldwide, including the Trevor Zoo in Millbrook, which is currently home to seven endangered animals. The boxes, known as KeepSafe boxes, were displayed in local businesses throughout the area and then auctioned off at the Trevor Zoo, with the proceeds being distributed to the Cheetah Conservation Fund, the International Crane Foundation, and the Red Wolf Project.

This year, you’re invited to join in on the fun! Using recycled cigar boxes as the base, artists are being asked to create pieces of art in whichever medium they see fit, all with a common theme consistent with cheetahs, lemurs, and their African wildlife habitats. The boxes are due no later than July 1st, 2014. There will be a kickoff cocktail party in Rhinebeck (date TBD), a party following drop-off at the Trevor Zoo for the artists (date TBD), and the main silent auction and public reception will be held at the Zoo on October 11th. The KeepSafe boxes will be displayed both online and around the local communities, and the proceeds from the auction in October will be distributed this year between the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia, Africa and the Lemur Conservation Foundation in Florida. Your passion and artistic talents can truly make a difference this year to save endangered animals and raise awareness and support for them in our community – don’t miss out on this opportunity to make an impact while having fun!

The Betsy Jacaruso Studio & Gallery will be one of three locations in Rhinebeck that will be displaying the boxes this July and August. If you are interested in participating, please contact Betsy at Betsyjacaruso@gmail.com.
